Mobile tv in Nigeria is taking new shape as MTN enters into the scene with their new packaged mobile tv service titled MTN Mobile tv. This is not the first time MTN Nigeria has offered mobile tv service to the public as the one they already offered was the DSTV mobile service which they did in agreement with DSTV Nigeria.

The new Mobile TV service being offered by MTN Nigeria is a bit different from DSTV mobile as it works on a data based service which is fast and streams tv channels to a wider range of mobile phones.

If you've got a Nokia, Samsung, Blackberrry, Techno or other mobile phone that can browse the web and stream tv, then it can make use of the mobile tv, thanks to MTN.

Plans available on the Mobile TV packages

Under each of the two packages, there are 2 plans available and they are:
- Weekly plan
- Monthly plan

Packages available on MTN Mobile tv
There are also 3 packages on the Mobile tv service and they are:

1. Basic package
2. Standard package
3. Premium package

The Basic package
This is a package that comes with the least number of channels and it comes with at least 4 channels to which a user can subscribe to on a weekly or monthly basis.

The weekly plan under this package comes with less data than the monthly and expires after 7 days whether or not the data plan has been exhausted.
Data limit: 75MB
Price: N350
Expiration: 7 days or data limit

The monthly plan under the basic package comes with more data and only expires after the data or 31 days has expired.
Data limit: 250MB
Price: N1200
Expiration: 31 days or data limit

The Standard package
This is a middle package that comes with the least number of channels and it comes with at least 4 channels to which a user can subscribe to on a weekly or monthly basis.

The weekly plan under this package comes with less data than the monthly and more than the basic. It expires after 7 days whether or not the data plan has been exhausted.
Data limit: 75MB
Price: N400
Expiration: 7 days or data limit

The monthly plan under the standard package comes with more data and only expires after the data or 31 days has expired.
Data limit: 250MB
Price: N1400
Expiration: 31 days or data limit

The Premium package
This package costs more than the basic package and it comes more data and a lot of channels from which a subscriber can choose up to 14.

The weekly plan under the premium package comes with the following details:
Data limit: 150MB
Price: N700
Expiration: 7 days or data limit

The monthly plan under the premium package is the most expensive of all the plans and comes with the following details

Data limit: 5000MB
Price: N2500
Expiration: 31 days or data limit

MTN Nigeria may make changes later on but these are the subscription packages as at the time I subscribed to the one week plan under the basic package. The video streaming is fast and works better during off peak periods. I think it comes with the fastest data service on MTN. It could be as fast as 2MBps

How to subscribe
To start using the Mobile tv service from MTN, you can subscribe by simply:

- Going to http://mobiletv.mtnonline.com with phone
- Select a package and plan
- Make payment with phone credit
- Start watching mobile tv on the go

It is that easy.

Conclusion
Personally, I still like the good old dstv mobile since this one doesn't have cnn and video quality is not as good as the former. Anyway, I think I'll write a post comparing the two later on. MTN Mobile tv still has some advantages over DSTV mobile too.
